Phoenix Suns’ center Shaquille O’Neal went to the Tempe Police Department in March 20 and filled out an application to be a volunteer. Talk about giving a big hand!

shaq.jpg

Sgt. Cindy Davies, spokesperson for the Tempe Police Department revealed Shaq’s initiative. She said that the reason why Shaq decided to volunteer for Tempe was unknown. She added that she was not privy to Shaq’s volunteering schedule or if he would still visit the police station during the National Basketball Association (NBA) playoffs.

Should Shaq start helping out at the police station, he would also engage in activities such as handing out flyers or acting as an interpreter just like the other volunteers do.

tickets-pleaseThe many sporting events organizers are seeing the pinch as people stay away from the costly boxing matches especially for those lesser fighters. Trivial fights that are non-title tend to get lesser sales in the past but with the current recession, more people are opting to stay at home and to watch these shows broadcast live on cable. One event organizer noted that canceling shows due to monetary concerns is unheard of but imagine counting on ticket sales to go into the hundreds of thousands and ending up with dismal sales of only 1500 two weeks before the scheduled fight in Madison Square Garden. The total cost of the ticket sales was around $130,000, but should they have gone through with the scheduled boxing event in the venue they would have had to pay up $250,000 which is a considerable loss.
Much is the effects of the economic recession with people opting to stay home and save their cash fro more pressing needs, the climbing jobless rate doesn;t help either so organizers are being cautious as to which events would be put on show.

Paul Pierce helped the defending champion Boston Celtics win the game over the Toronto Raptors by scoring 22 points in the last quarter which led to the 94-87 victory. In the first half, Boston Celtics trailed just 48 to 36. And when Pierce came in the second half, he made a lot of shots with the rivals contesting him. Paul Pierce made 36 points while Garnett made 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Boston Celtics even if they started the first half with a not so impressive performance. he then added a couple of points to stretch to a six point lead. The Raptor’s coach conceded citing the wonderful play executed in the second half. And he hopes to achieve that same level for his team the next time around.

On Dec. 6, 2008, Oscar De La Hoya would finally wrap- up his boxing career fighting Filipino star Manny Pacquiao, these two people are greatly renowned for their great boxing abilities.

The long- stalled discussion about fighting Manny Pacquiao recently revived when De La Hoya’s sides found an equal way to split the possible $100 million in profits from what’s certain to be boxing’s greatest fight where big money is involved since De La Hoya’s split-decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last year.

Excluding any last-minute changes of heart in a sometimes controversial negotiation, the fight will bring together boxing’s most bankable star and perhaps its most talented fighter at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

It hasn’t been an easy bout to make. Both boxers are making physical sacrifices for the 147-pound bout, De La Hoya is dropping down to welterweight for the first time in almost eight years while Pacquiao bulks up to the nearly heaviest weight of his career so far.

17.jpgBeijing Olympic officials have assured foreigners planning to visit China for the August Games that the country is safe despite an earthquake that killed some 10,000 people and possibly many more.

The Chinese capital is expected to welcome more than half a million foreign visitors for the August 8-24 Games and Zhang Jian of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (BOCOG) said they should not be concerned about natural disasters.

Zhang Jian, director of the project management department, assured reporters that the foreign visitors as well as Olympics participants are safe, Beijing is safe, China is safe.

Li Zhanjun, director of the BOCOG media centre, said that earthquakes had been taken into account when building the 31 venues in Beijing and the manpower required for the clean-up operation in Sichuan would not impact on the Games’ security.

18.jpgLike the Five Olympic Rings from which they draw their color and inspiration, Fuwa will serve as the Official Mascots of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, carrying a message of friendship and peace — and good wishes from China — to children all over the world.

Designed to express the playful qualities of five little children who form an intimate circle of friends, Fuwa also embody the natural characteristics of four of China’s most popular animals — the Fish, the Panda, the Tibetan Antelope, the Swallow — and the Olympic Flame.

Each of Fuwa has a rhyming two-syllable name — a traditional way of expressing affection for children in China. Beibei is the Fish, Jingjing is the Panda, Huanhuan is the Olympic Flame, Yingying is the Tibetan Antelope and Nini is the Swallow.

When you put their names together — Bei Jing Huan Ying Ni — they say “Welcome to Beijing,” offering a warm invitation that reflects the mission of Fuwa as young ambassadors for the Olympic Games.

Fuwa also embody both the landscape and the dreams and aspirations of people from every part of the vast country of China. In their origins and their headpieces, you can see the five elements of nature — the sea, forest, fire, earth and sky — all stylistically rendered in ways that represent the deep traditional influences of Chinese folk art and ornamentation.
