Manny Pacquiao, the celebrated boxer from the Philippines, has clinched the title of 2008 Fighter of the year from the Boxing Writer’s Association of America. This has bee the second time Pacquiao has been honored with the award, this most recent probably due to his destruction of boxing legend Oscar dela Hoya in a fight late last year. In 2008 alone Pacquiao managed to bag two world boxing titles - the WBC Super Featherweight in a March 2008 slugfest with Juan Manuel Marquez, and the WBC Lightweight title from David Diaz in June 2008. With undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather supposedly in retirement, Pacquiao was undisputedly considered as the best pound for pound fighter in the boxing world today. In tandem with his ward, Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach got voted as Trainer of the Year, his third time to cop the award.

The many sporting events organizers are seeing the pinch as people stay away from the costly boxing matches especially for those lesser fighters. Trivial fights that are non-title tend to get lesser sales in the past but with the current recession, more people are opting to stay at home and to watch these shows broadcast live on cable. One event organizer noted that canceling shows due to monetary concerns is unheard of but imagine counting on ticket sales to go into the hundreds of thousands and ending up with dismal sales of only 1500 two weeks before the scheduled fight in Madison Square Garden. The total cost of the ticket sales was around $130,000, but should they have gone through with the scheduled boxing event in the venue they would have had to pay up $250,000 which is a considerable loss.
Much is the effects of the economic recession with people opting to stay home and save their cash fro more pressing needs, the climbing jobless rate doesn;t help either so organizers are being cautious as to which events would be put on show.

Well, even sports outfits are not immune to the economic downturn that has businesses trying to save as much as they can for the long run. Previously jam packed stadiums are offering lower priced tickets for previously select seats normally occupied by celebrities and other famous people (don’t be fooled they’re still darned expensive). Taxis that used to get a lot of business go on for hours without passengers and normally fully booked hotels and bars have, well not many takers either.
Guess TV is the favorite game source to date for going to the game is just a tad bit too expensive for most people today. There are still some die hard fans who do spend the big bucks but not too much. Football, soccer and other sports are seeing the effects of the slowing economy with ad revenues shrinking and other money magnets not getting bites, it seems sports will see the effects soon enough (just a bit).

Paul Pierce helped the defending champion Boston Celtics win the game over the Toronto Raptors by scoring 22 points in the last quarter which led to the 94-87 victory. In the first half, Boston Celtics trailed just 48 to 36. And when Pierce came in the second half, he made a lot of shots with the rivals contesting him. Paul Pierce made 36 points while Garnett made 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Boston Celtics even if they started the first half with a not so impressive performance. he then added a couple of points to stretch to a six point lead. The Raptor’s coach conceded citing the wonderful play executed in the second half. And he hopes to achieve that same level for his team the next time around.

The ecstatic team, Tampa Bay Rays dropped their gloves, they tossed their caps, ran in from the outfield and threw themselves into a pile near the pitcher’s mound celebrating their recent their victory over Boston. The Tampa Bay Rays, full with triumphant emotion and soaked wet with champagne is now set to leave the partying behind and concentrate on the upcoming challenge. The team’s manager Joe Maddon gave his victorious champions the day off this Monday. This will allow them to recover from their fourth celebration in the past month and hopefully bring fresh motivation and begin to turn their attention to the Philadelphia Phillies. They are slotted to play Game 1 of the World Series this Wednesday. The manager felt it was good way for the team to recover from the emotional drain and allow everyting to sink in. the next day will be all work, he assures.

On Dec. 6, 2008, Oscar De La Hoya would finally wrap- up his boxing career fighting Filipino star Manny Pacquiao, these two people are greatly renowned for their great boxing abilities.
The long- stalled discussion about fighting Manny Pacquiao recently revived when De La Hoya’s sides found an equal way to split the possible $100 million in profits from what’s certain to be boxing’s greatest fight where big money is involved since De La Hoya’s split-decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last year.
Excluding any last-minute changes of heart in a sometimes controversial negotiation, the fight will bring together boxing’s most bankable star and perhaps its most talented fighter at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
It hasn’t been an easy bout to make. Both boxers are making physical sacrifices for the 147-pound bout, De La Hoya is dropping down to welterweight for the first time in almost eight years while Pacquiao bulks up to the nearly heaviest weight of his career so far.

The popular head coach of Louisiana State Pokey Chatman served a three-year tenure with an amazing 90 and 14 record that includes going 47 and 3 during her first 50 games which is the second best record for a head coach with at least 50 games in women’s basketball. Because of her outstanding achievements, she was also awarded the Coach of the Year by the Black Coaches Association for the years 2004 and 2005 not to mention being awarded the same title by the United States Basketball Writers Association in 2005 including the Naismith National Coach of the Year.
Despite her shining accomplishments, she has opted to resign from her position as head coach of the Minter where she originally played the guard position from 1988 to 1991. She has been involved in the school’s basketball program for the past 17 years in the capacity of player and later on as head coach.

It was reported that Serie A champions Inter Milan is letting go coach Roberto Mancini and replacing him is Jose Mourinho, a former manager of Chelsea, but still for confirmation. The 43-year-old Mancini had a meeting with the club president Massimo Moratti and in spite of his three successive titles, he was told that he was no longer needed in the club.
Despite the three Serie A titles, Mancini was not able to make the Inter Milan feasible contenders. It would come as a big surprise if Mancini had been kicked out, as what his agent, Giorgio De Giorgis, said.
Meanwhile during the last 16 of the champion’s league, Mancini had announced that he was leaving at the end of the season. But withdraw his statement the next day.
Since the 1965 win, Inter did not regain the title of the European Cup/Champions League.
